Poetry Noir: What’s Below Me, by Mark Tulin

There is comfort above
and a nightmare below,
and If Iโ€™m not careful,
my blind vulnerability
will lead me astray

My deceitful heart
will make the wrong choices,
hear deceptive voices,
and follow the loveless lies
of those who brandish the cross

It will lure my soul
down with bound ankles,
stripped of morals,
caught in perpetual sorrow,
where no poets survive

My body pulled
by underworld forces,
through a cosmic hole,
a convoluted maze,
rigid and dreamless.

I write about a variety of topics, from my early childhood in Philadelphia, to my years as a family therapist, and finally to my soul-searching present in California. These are narratives that may have a humorous or serious content or both. Either way, I hope my poetry and stories resonate with you.

  1. A strong under tow of emotions, and swimming sideways across the rip tide in the best way out …

    • Yep, Ivor. Thatโ€™s the way to navigate this dilemma. ๐Ÿ™‚๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  2. This is the second poem in a row I’ve read tonight that takes a very dark turn.

  3. And despite all of that horror your journey will have been worth it in the new beginning.

  4. The cosmic hole… who knows what lies there. It could be a portal to a more interesting reality. Or it could be another black hole.

  5. Reblogged this on The Reluctant Poet and commented:
    Come and Enjoy!

  6. Very powerful and relatable. ๐Ÿ™
