After the Fire by Mark Tulin After the fire, we could still taste the metallic smoke on our parched lips. A smell of charred homes and trees still linger under our noses. Our eyes still burn with tears of loss and fear. Will it happen again, we wonder. After the fire, there is a snowy dust that covers our cars and walkways. The sky glows a burnt orange from our back window. There is the mask that covers our faces. Like a dazed phantom, we lurk behind closed doors in dark, secret spaces. In our worried minds, we still see the flames on the distant hillside. We have nightmares of being trapped and left behind.

A compelling poem, Mark. Poignant and deeply moving.

Gosh….I hope You and Yours were alright after the fires. This is so strong.
Yes, we made it through alright. As bad as it gets, people still love it here. 🙂🙂
Yay!!! Happy to hear that! And, I know. Lived in Los Angeles for 28 years. Earthquakes and fires be damned!!! 😅
Yes, and we mustn’t forget the mudslides. I didn’t realize how devastating they were until last year in Montecito.
Right? Good Lord. Crazy.
So descriptive of what we deal with when witnessing these terrorizing events. Yet, your poem is calming and peaceful. Thank you for your insight.
Thanks, Theresa. Hope you’re doing well. Mark
