My Idealistic Friend, a Poem by Mark Tulin

My idealistic friend believes
in big things,
in revolutions,
in developing an economic system
so everyone has an equal chance.

He wants to rearrange the solar system
so there’s more light in the world,
to be a part of a larger, more fantastic
plan, transforming
our universal mind,
our myths and fairy tales.

But he doesn’t understand.
It’s not just his or my world
to change or rearrange.
It belongs to everyone.

I told my idealistic friend
that I wouldn’t change a damn thing.
Who am I to decide?
I have enough problems
breaking my ego
and keeping my soul alive.

I am an author, poet, humorist, and short story writer from Palm Springs, California. I write about various topics, from my early childhood in Philadelphia to my years as a family therapist and finally to my soul-searching in California. These are poetic narratives that may have humorous or serious content or both. Either way, I hope my poetry and stories resonate with you.

  2. I’m with the speaker of your poem, I’m afraid. I have enough problems breaking my ego and keeping my soul alive. But one thing I can do is be kind. It won’t change the world, but it might bring a brief light to someone who is in a dark corner.
