Tribe–A Poem by Mark Tulin

A tribe of savages
conspire
to make an innocent girl miserable.
For she is a loner,
a vulnerable one
without confidence
or a leg to stand on.

The tribe turns up the heat
against her will,
unfriendly fire
behind her back
soon to hear herself
crying,
cutting herself with fear,
blaming food for all her
troubles.

The tribe is fortified
with pure jealousy,
reinforced with cold-hearted
stainless steel.
They make sure they pop
her bubble,
destroy a young girl’s starry light.

The tribe rarely grows
more than a wicked few,
a short half-life,
full of chaff and rot.

  1. “Blaming food for all her troubles”. The road to an eating disorder. So sad. Powerful words here.

  2. Is she also being bullied, which can also contributd to the eating disorder? Which is terrible and cruel.

  3. Those tribes are so insecure and always motivated by the most insane jealousy. But somehow wield so much power in their little worlds. It’s only temporary, there’s a much bigger world that will soon teach them, too, about pain. Without the comfort or protection of their malicious little pack. But still. So painful to those who stoke their collective envy in the mean time. My heart hurt reading this. ❤

  4. My high school had bullying, it seems to wax and wane, not too troublesome my year, but my younger sister’s class had a lot of this crap going on, and at least one suicide. Chaff and rot is right, a good strong poem.

    • Thank you, Robert. Its awful for both genders but especially difficult for young girls who get bullied, a lot of mind games that are hard to stop. Appreciate your commentary.

  5. A very powerful narrative poem Mark, sometimes the pack animal nature of these tribe type mentalities, leaves wondering about humanity…

  6. 1st rule of the jungle, weed out the vulnerable!

  7. Moving poem, Mark. I was that girl in my younger years. It takes great determination to heal those wounds.
And yes evolution is very slow on this dense plane.
You have a kind heart Mark. Thank you for writing about this.
