Theme: What inspires me as a writer?

Early Morning Truth
By Mark Tulin

I wake up early,
and rise with drowsy eyes,
with ideas on the tip
of my tongue,
fragile but true—
I sit at my desk,
with the patience
of a fisher.

My writing is not an obsession,
but a passion.
It is the most effective way
to express myself.

I seek the richness in those
who are neglected.
I write so others can feel
what I feel,
so strangers can know me.

I write to document the stories
of my past,
my hope for the future—
and to understand
the predicament
of the present moment.

I want to be in touch
with my inner voice,
so I can trust my intuition.

But above all, I want my words
to reflect parts of my soul,
my essence—
proving to me and others
that I am alive—
and I was here.
