Poem: Ragtag Lives by Mark Tulin

The young man is wearing a black cap
with a certified atheist logo in gold lettering
The woman dons a purple alpaca sweater
with her free-range ostrich eggs in her backpack
Their pug is sipping some raw ginger water
with its butt recently bleached and waxed

They both have sleeve tattoos
and funky nose rings and stretched-out
ear gauges and they seem to be talking
more with their hands and tight abs
than with their tongues and eyes

as they eat toasted wheat germ bagels
with strawberry jam and gulp down tariff-free coffee
with goats milk and two shots of whatever’s trendy
as if they’re psyched for an apocalyptic afternoon

in their ragtag clothes and their organic minds
and their dog who’s too sore to sit down
They try to figure out what to do with their lives
reading coffee grounds from the bottom of a ceramic cup.

Beautiful poem, Mark. You are a great observant of details by the way you describe the people, the situation and what they are doing. I have enjoyed this poem very much.

DUDEEEEE!!! I LOVE this poem. Oh my god!! It’s a mini movie and wonderful social commentary and pop culture all having a great party! You rock! Cheers! 🤗

Our world has certainly changed. I’d like to use the term “worlds” rather than the singular, because there is a confused divergence between the they and the us on this planet. I remember when being e free spirit meant dressing and acting like a hippie. In today’s society of legalized marijuana and alternate lifestyle choices, even the bizarre at times seem to be a welcoming sight. These “New Age”? hipsters seem harmless enough, though they are young ones who as yet haven’t seen the big picture. Excellent poem!

That’s what I’m trying to do, Pablo–see the big picture. And it’s frustrating when people don’t even try. Thank you for your comment. 🙂
