The Santa Paula Mountain by Mark Tulin

A big shoutout to Moss Puppy Magazine for including my poem “The Santa Paula Mountain,” page 107.

This particular poem has several versions. This one is the latest with the theme of Blades.

The Santa Paula Mountain
by Mark Tulin

I can see South Mountain
under a bright California sun,
gazing onto the Santa Clara River Valley,
above tiny, one-story houses,
street lights on Main Street,
bumpy, curvy roads going uphill,
tracks with an occasional train,
small private planes going in circles
dotting the Santa Paula landscape
where the letters, SP, are carved
into the mountain’s forehead
by the blade of an indigenous spirit,
and fresh spring water
flowing through its veins.
