Jane's Fears, by Mark Tulin
My sister hides her writing. She wants to be published but won’t send it to magazines.
When I asked her why, she said, “I’m afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“Never mind.”
I worry about her wasting her talent. She works so diligently, honing her skills and storytelling.
And then, Jane told me her secret.
“I don’t want to disappoint Dad. If he doesn’t like my stories, I will feel ashamed and stop writing.”
“Have courage,” I said.
“No. I’ll wait until Dad passes so I won’t have to fear him anymore.”
“But he’ll still be in your head,” I said.
Thank you, Malvina Perova, for your commentary:
“This is really deep. It touches on the real problem of “someone in the head,” making us live by false rules. This someone stands between us and the truth, and we all think that this someone IS the truth. And I don’t mean parents or the law, but the idea we built within ourselves is illusional. Amazing story, so beautifully done, thank you!”
