AWKWARD ADOLESCENT WORDS
written by: Mark Tulin

Sometimes maudlin verse
can be slightly nauseating—
the spilling of romantic feelings,
splattered on the page

Sometimes, a poet needs to write
about love’s cliche in rhythm,
tenderly and self-indulgent
with a lot of sentimentalities

Sometimes the soul has to express
its overly-emotional heart
in awkward adolescent words,
not so subtle or refined

Sometimes a poet has to get
down on his metaphorical knees,
and humble himself
in the name of sappy love.
