Walnut Hulls by Mark Tulin—Cooweescoowee 2019

Check out the multifaceted literary journal from Rogers State University in Oklahoma.

My poem about a feisty Mexican Granny, Walnut Hulls, on Page 88.

Originally created in 1907 from the western Saline District of the Cherokee Nation, this area was named the Cooweescoowee District, and Cooweescoowee County at the time of statehood. But the residents protested and the name was changed to Rogers County, after Clem Vann Rogers, a prominent Cherokee rancher and father of Will Rogers.

I like your account of the feisty Mexican granny doing the boogie-woogie. (Did you notice the disclaimer in the front of the journal; it’s very funny.)

That’s my Granny alright! Nice work, Mark. I love how you envisioned her. I’m glad I inherited her love for dancing. I know she’s watching me when I do. Thank goodness I got to go two weeks ago before this all hit.
