A road trip takes a regrettable turn.

Freelance writer, poet, yogi and photographer from Santa Barbara, California. I write and take pictures about a variety of topics, from my early childhood in Philadelphia, to my years as a family therapist, and finally to my soul-searching years in California. The things that move me may have a humorous or serious content or both. Either way, I hope my poetry, pictures and stories resonate with you.

  1. I really enjoyed this Mark

  2. A well written story, Mark. Sometimes I feel short stories are somehow incomplete. When you finish the last line you feel empty, like something is missing and you want some more. Yours, instead, is well-rounded. However, it would make a perfect start for a novel. Have you considered that?

    • No I haven’t with this story. But thanks for the suggestion. It will be in the back of my head and, who knows. I appreciate your insight. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

      • You are welcome. I always find the issue of young people getting involved with drugs very interesting. This is perhaps because I am a high school teacher as well.

Reading your story I thought of my writer friend Mario Savioni. He is currently writing a novelette, “Pickles and Tarts”, which I strongly recommend you and your followers (very short chapters, easy to read; by the way, Mario lives also in California, close to San Francisco). “Pickles and Tarts” is a story where 54-year-old Frank has been selected by 19-year-old Nicole through a dating site. Frank looks at Nicole’s photos on the site and is attracted to her beauty. Nicole tells him she has a boyfriend and is not interested in a romantic relationship. She adds: “It’s fun to talk to different people sometimes.” The only apparent thing Frank and Nicole seem to have in common is their interest to write stories. Perhaps they want to meet just to write one together? Now Frank has already started to imagine this story, a story-within-the-main-story. “Pickles and Tarts” is a lovely story of illusion-delusion, dream-reality, non-conformist with the Capitalist system, reflective on love, sex, drugs, abuse, loneliness and human relationships in today’s world. It is profound and highly intriguing. I recommend chapter 13:

      • Thanks for the link. Will do.

      • Yes, please. You have no idea of how important this is to me and to Mario. I hope you like his work as much as I do. Without Mario, I wouldn’t have started my blog nor have crossed paths with you, Mark.
