The Potato Bug, by Mark Tulin

We were watching TV in the living room as this huge insect crawled toward us. We didn’t know what it was. It greeted us with a crazy wave and a slurpy sputter.

“How are you?” it screeched. “Do you want to play?”

I told Clara to back up as I retrieved a can of Raid.

“It looks like a Potato Bug,” said Clara.

As I was about to spray, my wife cried out. “Wait, I recognize that face!”

“You do?”

“Yes!”

I dropped the can of Raid as I allowed the large creature to approach us.

It was our son.
