Morning After, by Mark Tulin

She still felt woozy from the fall yesterday after missing the last step. She wasn’t getting any younger, although, in her mind, she was only fifty. She wished her son had called to see how she was doing. He’s so busy nowadays.

She reached for the toothpaste in the medicine cabinet and began to brush her teeth. The toothpaste tasted odd, not minty but more like medicine. She put on her glasses and inspected the label, and discovered it was her ointment. She looked regrettably into the mirror while rinsing out her mouth, noticing the lines in her face.

    The downside of aging: losing our balance and eyesight. I feel her uneasiness and need for support.
