Maya's Silence, by Mark Tulin
22/5/2020

The people of the small town wanted ten-year-old Maya to talk. Some called her names, teased her, and said that she was a bad girl for not using her voice. They thought she was being spiteful for not responding to people with spoken words or communicating through writing.

Her classmates got so frustrated that they hit and bullied her. They called her selfish as if there was something shameful or evil about her.

"Many people use words to injure or harm others," Maya thought. "When I decide to talk, I want it to be for the right reasons."

Oh wow! Wise girl! I always loved Maya’s quotes but didn’t know this about her. Thanks for the poem!
