Repost of the Makeshift Traveller by Mark Tulin

Robin from The Poet posted Makeshift Traveller on her Facebook page. The poem appeared in several places–The Poet Anthology was one of them. Featured photo by Mark Tulin.

The poem is based on a traveling homeless man I spotted in Santa Barbara a few years back. His resourcefulness and creativity in his survival resonated with me. When faced with the tragedy of being homeless, it’s people like the Makeshift Traveler who I admire.

Very well said! I love the spirit it reflects. Surviving on the bare minimum, the traveller feels contented and at peace with himself. “It serves me well, ” says it all. In Hindu philosophy of lifr, we are all makeshift travellers, as Lord Krishna tells Arjuna in the Gita.
