THERAPY AS A METAPHOR
written by: Mark Tulin

I save money on therapy.
I lie on the couch of free verse,
writing twenty-line poetry,
sharing my feelings through syntax
and stanza in a spiral-bound book.

I channel my angst
in metaphor and simile.
I sublimate my desires
through wishes and dreams.

My therapist is the blank page
that I pour my heart into,
dribs and drabs of a troubled past.

My interventions
are the awareness of my thoughts
and emotions,
the mindfulness of my actions
and deeds.

I realize that there will never be any resolutions
to most of my problems and concerns,
just better poetry.

I am an author, poet, humorist, and short story writer living in Long Beach, California. I write about various topics, from my early childhood in Philadelphia to my years as a family therapist and finally to my soul-searching in California. These are poetic narratives that may have humorous or serious content or both. Either way, I hope my poetry and stories resonate with you. My books include Magical Yogis, Uncommon Love Stories, Awkward Grace, Junkyard Souls, and Rain on Cabrillo.
