Salty Kisses, a Poem by Mark Tulin

An alluring beauty with swaying hips
and long legs on rollerblades,
streaks of sunlight across her face
and salty kisses of ocean mist.

Her fragrance of freshly-picked strawberries
and the citrus of orange groves.
Her beauty a field of golden poppies,
mustard grass growing on the hillsides.

She speaks through barking elephant seals
and screeching seagulls;
the cool sea breeze of Monterey
and the windswept colors of the Mojave.

She flies over canyons and mountaintops,
soaring like Icarus toward the sun,
and rises up like a surfer queen
slicing through seventy-foot Maverick waves.

  5. LOVE this!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  6. Love the beautiful imagery of your poem, Mark. So glad to have come back to your poetry after a long time. This poem is marvelously structured and has a very musical flow because of both structure and imagery related to all senses: sight, taste, smell, touch, sound…

The first stanza alludes to freedom with the visual description of the female beauty on rollerblades. The “streaks of sunlight across her face” is a very beautiful pictorial image. I can imagine the freedom of movement and feel the salty air coming from the vast ocean. “Salty kisses” is perfect and includes the senses of smell, taste and touch.

I like how you continue to play with all the senses in the second stanza where, there is again smell with “her fragrance of freshly-picked strawberries” and sight with the golden poppies. Very beautiful.

The third stanza is dominated by a new sense: sound, with the barking of the elephant seals, the screeching seagulls and the effect of the cool breeze.

The last stanza is all about the movements of the beautiful woman with her rollerblades as if flying or surfing. Love the reference to Icarus’ flight (my favorite ancient Greek myth since I was a little child).

This is really a lovely poem. I am enraptured. In this piece I see the contemplation of a female beauty in the natural landscape. The woman is like a bird flying, enjoying freedom, which reminds me of my poet friend Mario Savioni, who is currently writing a novel where he refers to women through his main character, Frank, as “these innocent birds looking for freedom”. There is so much connection with your lovely poem. I strongly recommend you and your followers to read this chapter. Like you, Mario is an excellent writer: https://savioni.wordpress.com/2019/02/27/pickles-and-tarts-chapter-8/
