Poem: Out of the Cage by Mark Tulin

It’s safe and comfortable in my cage,
but someday
I want to go outside into the wild

and sniff around and explore—
maybe find something somewhere
that’s better than this old pen.

I want to discover a new place to live
where my life doesn’t feel so confined,
where I don’t have to burrow to hide.

Maybe there’s that one person that I’ll meet,
a companion that is suited only for me,
a life that won’t be so mundane and routine.

A shift in my thinking would also do.
A sliver of light, a breath of fresh air,
finding an opening to squeeze through.

I yearn for that sweet chew of freedom
where I could roam and find a new way of being
without Big Brother following me.

I do hope that place exists. 🙂

  2. I love this….. great use of simple language to bring across the animal’s emotions…. I have a pet too, but he’s pretty much free to roam around as he likes..

  3. It does not exist in my Country, England, right now in fact “Big Brother” is becoming far too dangerous. How I wish England could return to how it once was the Freedom you mention, the right to Free Speech, the support of the public for their Armed Forces, not having “others” dictating what the Armed Forces must “think”. Oh, if only the 1950s could suddenly arrive again when people were nice people were decent, then I would want to go out, right now I don’t. Love all your work, all the very best to you.

Believe me no country is free from the clutches of Big Brother. Even in India freedom while we progress in few spheres we are regressing elsewhere

      • That’s true. That’s why i’m looking for it inside. I want to feel free even though in reality Big Brother is still there. 🙂

    • I do long to be around decent people who are mindful of each other. I think that’s why I moved to California from the east coast. I wanted more freedom and to be around people who weren’t so angry. I feel I’ve gotten that but the people here tend not to appreciate their beautiful state. I can’t worry about others. I have to find a peaceful state of mind. I appreciate your opinion and it’s interesting to find out what’s going on in other countries. 🙏🏻

I remember those times here in the United States. I wish for those freedoms that you should enjoy again. We should all have one Entity watching over us. In that way, we can enjoy the freedom of being Brothers and Sisters in Faith. May God be with you all.

  4. Sweet lines,
    Strong sentiments,
Deep truths. I like it. Liam

  5. Clever, I love the personal angle – without big brother – yes please.

  6. I love the perspective and the raw emotion in this!

California is definitely a “free state of mind”. I’m glad to count you in as a fellow resident. We all need to be aware of the “Big Brother” possibility and be mindful of it. Let’s hang on to the humanity that like an animal longs to be free. A cage doesn’t have to be like what a hamster or other caged pet experiences; it can be the boxes we put around us metaphorically. It can also be the ones we carry with us. Take time to “unplug” from the world and enjoy the freedom we’re all blessed with.

Thank you so much for being brave to share this not-so-new idea of freedom!

  8. Don’t you have a harness & lease so you take this little guy for a walk? ☺Your little guy would really, really be so happy after the fresh air. 🐹Or if you have a breast pocket on your jacket or shirt, 🐹put him in there for a birds eye view of everything. 🐹BUT be aware if you have large birds flying around in your area. Have a great day!! 😎

    • i like to put him on my shoulder like a parrot. And yes i have to watch so the birds don’t get him, especially the crows and the hawks. 🐹🐹🐹

  9. Sweet baby. Adorable face.
