Tuesday’s Picture: Gull on a Pole

At first glance he seems innocent,

a feathery gull butt on top of a pole,

an overstuffed beach bird,

a faceless rear end askew

but if I stare up at the pole,

as I sometimes do in my backyard,

I feel the delicate drops

splattering one by one

like sticky misshapen snowflakes,

mixed with fully-digested colors,

a steady pileup on the ground,

ashes from an atomic bomb,

waiting for a sudden rain to come

to wash it all away.
